Materials Science Venture Investing

Presented by Unilever Technology Ventures

Dr. Min Zhou Berbon, Senior Associate

Unilever Technology Ventures is one of the venture capital funds of Unilever,
an Anglo-Dutch Consumer Packaged Goods company. UTV invests in startup
companies with technologies of potential interest to Unilever. UTV primarily
invests in materials science and life science companies.

Innovation in materials science plays an important role in many industries, including energy, clean tech, electronics, health and specialty materials.

However, materials science has been relatively underserved by venture capital because of the lack of industry-wide business models, the need for high capital investment, the usually long sales cycles etc. This talk discusses the challenges of making a venture-fundable materials science company and gives a
few examples in the UTV portfolio.
