ASM - South Bay Chapter's
November 2007 Meeting

Metallography of Iron Meteorites

This month we are fortunate to have Frauke Hogue, vice president of the International Metallographic Society (IMS) speaking on the Metallography of Iron Meteorites. The talk will focus on a variety of meteorites, including Gibeon, Canyon Diablo, Campo del Cielo and others, and the different etching techniques, including color etching, used to reveal the different structures.

Only about 6% of the meteorites (pieces of asteroids that have been broken out by a cosmic collisions) are iron meteorites. Consisting of iron and 5-15% Ni, in addition to some trace impurities, they are very different from steels because of the very slow cooling rates (1 – 100 degrees per million years!) experienced in the absolute vacuum of space, although the structure is still made up of ferrite and austenite.

Frauke Hogue received her metallography training in Germany at the Lette Verein before coming to the United States, and has over 40 years of experience in metallography, 20 of which in failure analysis. In addition to consulting with many failure analysis companies in the LA area, she also teaches “Metallographic Techniques”, “Metallography of Fasteners” and “Practical Interpretation of Microstructures”, a course which she developed, at ASM International. Every year Frauke is one of the mentors at the Eisenman Materials Camp in Cleveland, exposing high school students to the field of material science and failure analysis.

One of Frauke’s hobbies is color metallography of iron meteorites.

This is certain to be an exciting and unique talk, not to be missed
