ASM - South Bay Chapter's
November 2006 Meeting
Apollo 1 Fire and Its Effect on The Space
Industry
On 27 January 1967, three NASA astronauts, “Gus” Grissom, Edward White and Roger Chaffee, were lost when a fire erupted in their Apollo 1 capsule. Situated atop an unfueled Saturn 1B launch vehicle, the three astronauts were practicing a countdown and performing a “plugs out” test to see if the new Apollo spacecraft could run on its own internal power. This presentation by Dr. Dan Dennies discusses what happened, what was the root cause of the failure and what was the impact to the Aerospace business
Dr. Daniel P. Dennies is an Associate Technical Fellow for the Boeing Company and has 27 years experience as a metallurgist and performing failure investigations. He authored the book “How to Organize and Run a Failure Investigation,” released in September 2005. The majority of his career has been in the aerospace industry working on projects such as the Space Shuttle Main Engine, the National Launch System, the National Aerospace Plane, expendable launch systems like Delta and Titan and, most recently, the International Space Station.
I have never been disappointed in any topic Dan has presented at our meetings, and I'm sure this one won't be any different. Be sure to make you reservations early by emailing your request Marc Kashinsky, or calling (805)271-2242. See you all there!
