Dr. John Porter,
Assoc. Professor UC Irvine
“DARPA Grand Challenge III”
Thursday, October 19th, 2006
The DARPA Grand Challenge is a prize competition for driverless cars sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Teams from academia and corporate America challenge each other to see whose autonomous vehicle can complete a previously unknown course in the shortest amount of time. The DARPA Urban Challenge will feature autonomous ground vehicles executing simulated military supply missions safely and effectively in a mock urban area. Safe operation in traffic is essential to U.S. military plans to use autonomous ground vehicles to conduct important missions.
Dr. Porter is currently the senior microscopist at the Carl Zeiss Center for Excellence at the University of California, Irvine's California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) and an expert in metallurgy.

Directions to Calit2 |
|
|
From the engineering parking structure you exit the west side of the building and follow the walking trail down to the North end of the NFCRC (white building with a crane outside). There is a wooden stairway that leads up between the NFCRC and the Engineering counceling trailors. Keep walking straight past the Engineering Gateway on your left and IERF on your right until you see a building with a 4 story glass front on it to your left. That is Calit2.
