“Introduction to Nitinol and Its Application in Medical Devices”

7:00pm: Food and refreshments in La Quinta Inn Conference Room

8:00pm: Dr. XY Gong lecture

Abstract:

This presentation opens with a brief review on the thermo-mechanical properties of Nitinol including Shape Memory and Superelasticity and follows with illustrations of Nitinol’s broad applications in various industries. The applications of Nitinol in medical implant industry are demonstrated in two applications: design optimization by means of tuning material properties, as is illustrated in Homer-Mammalok wire-needle-locator; self-expanding peripheral stent, with evaluation and prediction of key design issues such as stent radial forces, crush resistance and fatigue characteristics discussed in detail.

Bio:

Xiao-Yan Gong received his PhD in mechanical properties of materials from the University of California at Santa Barbara. His specialties include computational mechanics, structural mechanics, and mechanical properties of materials. Dr. Gong's career on the medical devices and implants industry started from Sulzer Carbomedics in June 1998 where he made the nonlinear FEA a daily routine exercise in heart valve design.

In October 2000, Dr. Gong joined Nitinol Devices & Components, A Johnson & Johnson Company. During his stay at NDC until August 2006, he advanced the FEA on Nitinol, conducted Nitinol fatigue tests, helped create NDC's Nitinol fatigue program, provided expert advises to many J&J products, delivered countless technical reports for regulation submissions, organized internal and external technical symposiums, chaired multiple technical sessions, was invited for many technical presentations, and produced many publications.

In August 2006, Xiao-Yan Gong founded Medical Implant Mechanics LLC, a consulting service firm to meet the increasing demands of mechanics in medical devices and implant industry. Dr. Gong is the ASTM stent standard committee fatigue to failure task group leader and hold two US patents.
