Genius Metal, Inc., Monrovia, CA. has created several families of new materials with an unprecedented combination of hardness, toughness and ultra-high temperature capability manufactured via sintering processes. The wide range of applications suitable for the patented cermets include cutting tools, forming tools, friction stir welding tools, mining & construction tools, thermal spray coatings, wear parts, furnace fixtures, and ultra-high temperature applications. Scott Liu has over 25 years experience on various materials and process development. He also worked on Fracture Mechanics, Low Cycle Fatigue, and life management of critical components
Abstract
Genius Metal, Inc., Monrovia, CA. has created several families of new materials with an unprecedented combination of hardness, toughness and ultra-high temperature capability manufactured via sintering processes. The patented cermets’ ultra-high hardness of up to 2800 kg/mm2 (HV), fracture toughness of 8 MPa·m0.5, and high temperature capability above 2500˚C make them particularly cost-effective for processing difficult-to-machine materials and enhancing productivity. The materials have also been successfully demonstrated with CVD and PVD processes to further optimize application specific properties. The wide range of applications suitable for the patented cermets include cutting tools, forming tools, friction stir welding tools, mining & construction tools, thermal spray coatings, wear parts, furnace fixtures, and ultra-high temperature applications.
Biography
Dr. Scott Liu is founder and president of Genius Metal, Inc. He has over 25 years of experience on various materials (Superalloys, ODS alloys, Ti-alloys, Cermet, and Hardmetal) and process development (Powder process, Melting, Extrusion and forging) at GE-Aircraft Engine, TRW, SR Engineering, and Special Metal. He also worked on Fracture Mechanics, Low Cycle Fatigue, and life management of critical components.
Scott received his PhD in Material Science from University of Cincinnati in 1978, and his MS and BS in Physics at Wright State University and Tamkang University.
