Impact of Lead (Pb)-free Materials on Electronic System Safety

SPEAKER:

Andy Kostic

Dr. Kostic been intimately involved in the fields of electronics product quality and reliability for over 35 years and has extensive experience with both semiconductor fabrication and electronic system manufacturing

He was the founder and chairman of the Northrop Grumman Lead-Free Working Group and has done research in lead-free solders and platings investigating tin whisker growth and prevention. Dr. Kostic has also worked with the University of Maryland CALCE studying tin plague.

Andy has held senior technical leadership positions in the Unisys Component Engineering Procurement Organization, IBM Global Procurement Quality Engineering, IBM Microelectronics Corporate Quality, and Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems.

He has taught quality and reliability improvement classes all over the world which have been highly praised by his students as being effective and practical.

Dr. Kostic has an extensive background in reliability that includes:

·       Reliability modeling and prediction

·       Supplier auditing and evaluation

·       Electrical characterization

·       Incoming inspection

·       FRACAS

·       Failure analysis

·       Environmental Stress Screening

·       Supplier qualification and management

·       Component qualification

·       Lead-free electronics

ABSTRACT

Looking for a way to cause environmental damage and as catastrophic failures in pacemakers, satellites, nuclear power plants, and other critical/expensive electronics? This is now available thanks to the European Union and RoHS.

Dr. Kostic's presentation will address discuss the actual effects that lead   (Pb)-free solders and plating have had on:

  • The environment
  • Reliability
  • Safety

He will also address their:

  • Failure mechanisms and their root cause
  • Impact on reworkability and repair
  • Test methods and their accuracy
  • Methods of mitigation and their relative effectiveness
  • Department of Defense guidance on use

Scientists, engineers, environmentalists, and Luddites* of all ages will enjoy an entertaining evening. Plus learn the meaning of the word "hormesis" to astound your friends and impress your management.

  • Luddite = One who opposes technical or technological change
