March 2008 Meeting

UPHVS Heat Treating of Aluminum Alloys

Speakers:

Tom Croucher and Doug Nord
Newton Heat Treating Co. Inc.

Abstract:

The UPHVS is a specialized heat treating method applied to aluminum alloys to relieve internal stress induced by conventional heat treating practice. The internal stress needs to be reduced significantly to prevent its release during machining, thus causing warpage of the part

The subject process has been proven valuable when applied to “critical” aerospace components. These include optical mirrors, missile guidance systems, and computer components requiring a high degree of dimensional stability. Newton Heat Treating’s business over the past forty years has been primarily in the heat treating of aerospace parts. Primary customers include Boeing, Lockheed, Raytheon, and JPL.

Presenter's Background:

Mr. Croucher will take the lead presentation explaining the UPHVS process and the related metallurgical aspects. He has had over forty years of diversified experience in the heat treating industry.
